What's Changed?
It's now only days away before we start filming for our major project. Therefore, after our rehearsals and reading through the script, there has been a number of changes, which are:
MAJOR CHANGES
We've faced a coupe of major changes, which are:
- Having to remove Vic as a character. This is because our actor has dropped out less than 2 weeks before we start filming, making it very difficult to find a replacement in such a short amount of time. Nonetheless, due to his character not having a major role, Kate and I decided to remove him as a character and to fill his action parts within the script with other actors. For example, Ruby now comforts Maddie rather than Vic, and Jordan now has his own talking head.
- Generally emphasising that it is an AMATEUR production company. After receiving feedback from Simon it didn't seem very clear that the company isn't professional. Therefore, I''ve tried to emphasise this by getting Jamie to talk about his promotion at 'Spill da Beanz', and for John to say to Giles and Alex that they don't want to return back to their 'boring' part-time jobs.
MINOR CHANGES
Scene 1: Adding in the 'Alcoholics Anonymous' section for Alex. The purpose of this is so that the audience can understand Alex's patronising tone and how she tries to start off with a joke which doesn't turn out to be funny.
Scene 2: Alex saying 'Five, six, seven, eight' as she counts the number of audition sheets.
Scene 3: Adding in Chantelle's song. Kate has created her own soundtrack and lyrics for Chantelle's performance. This includes a spoken word section of the song and is aimed to be cringy and cheesy, so that the audience immediately learn more about who Chantelle is.
Scene 8: Ruby now scares Alex & Giles, instead of Vic. This is due to our actor Vic dropping out and being unavailable for shoot dates just under 2 weeks before we begin filming.
Scene 9: Dialogue refinement, so that both Ruby and Jamie interrupt each other more and seem more nerve-racking. This was changed as during rehearsals it seemed that they both needed more conversation to fuel this idea of the camera making it nerve-racking for the two to speak to one another, and harder for Jamie to ask Ruby out for lunch.
Scene 11: Jordan now has a talking instead rather than Vic. This is mainly due to the actor for Vic dropping out, and allowing Jordan to have his own talking head. This worked quite well as we learn that Jordan notices Maddie's talent and sets up the disruption that Chantelle won't be impressed that she now has competition.
Scene 12: Changing Chantelle's dad to not say 'Tokyos on the phone' and instead just say 'I'm on the phone.' This is mainly due to it not seeming realistic for him to be on the phone to Tokyo.
Scene 15: Setting up a previous disruption by getting John to say "Yes it's true, we've had support from Chantelle's father before". This mainly helps to dramatise the narrative by showing that John has had some troubles with Chantelle in the past.
Scene 17: Refining John's dialogue to emphasise that everyone in the AmDram has everyday part-time jobs. This helps to add to the realism of the narrative and shows that it is an AMATEUR AmDram - not a professional, as the majority of the actors have part-time jobs.
Scene 20: Jamie mentioning that he has a promotion in his part-time job 'Spill da Beanz'. This too helps to show that it is an amateur production company.
Scene 21: Alex saying that Giles will be playing the role as Hook. This is due to our actor for Vic dropping out, and we needed someone else to cover the role. It also sets up a comedic moment as Giles is expecting an applause but doesn't get one.
Scene 23: Ruby now comforts Maddie instead of Vic. This is due to our actor for Vic dropping out. Nonetheless, what happens in the scene is still the same: Maddie gets comfort however is lectured and shows that she is loosing interest in what they're saying.
Scene 28: Slight dialogue refinement for Alex.
Scene 29: Dialogue refinement for Maddie and Alex. Maddie is made out to be as if she sits on her own quite often: she jokes then realises that it makes her seem quite odd.
Scene 31: Jordan turns up late however turns up in a Peter Pan costume. Alex comments at him however he isn't happy and tries to ignore what he's wearing. You then find out at the end of the episode who gave him the costume. Giles also comments and seems intrigued from his costume.
Scene 32: Chantelle dialogue refinement to make her seem more stubborn and annoyed. Jordan asks if Ruby's ok before she runs off stage to throw up.
Scene 34: Chantelle assists Jordan with the script, causing him to become annoyed.
Scene 36: We see Alex mime 'Do it!' to Maddie, edging her to take the role as Wendy. We hear the camera man shout as Chantelle chases him off stage.
Scene 37: Giles saying 'bugger!' as he doesn't realise he's been saying Maggie rather than Maddie.
Below is the fifth (and hopefully last) draft of the script for 'Downstage':
Conclusion
All in all, I am overly happy with script and now feel that this will be the final script that will be based on during our shoot dates. Of course, it is likely that we will face some challenges whilst filming that may effect the script, however this can be updated once the post-production stage begins.
