What Soundtrack Will we be Using for our News Channel?
Now that we've finished filming, my group and I are now going to focus on the sounds we need for our news channel. The sounds which we are focusing on are:
- Our jingle: A sound which gives our channel its own persona, which will be used for the intro,
outro and linking our stories together.
- An intro: for this, we will need our jingle to be introduced which should last for around 30-40
seconds. It will begin with our jingle which will then have the soundtrack in the background
whilst our reporter talks about the top stories for our news show. This will then lead to the jingle to
play again after they've been announced, leading back to our studio.
- An outro: This will again play our jingle however we are aiming to make this slightly different to
the introduction, but not to a large extent that they sound dissimilar.
Now that we know what we want, I then sent out an advert on casting call pro. This advert discussed how it must link to our student audience meaning that it should be modernised, energetic and fun. You can see what I wrote on the advert below:
Who Applied?
Within a couple of days, I already received 6 applicants whom are interested in the project. This can be seen below:
Lona Muaka
Justin Wetherill
Joe Ruby
Geoffrey Alexander
Martino Scovacricchi
Andrew McAlinden
What Happens Next?
After looking through each applicants showreel, I then firstly thanked them for showing an interest in the project, followed by asking them to send me what they think would be a good introduction for the news project. I then said once they've sent a draft, which should be 10 seconds plus, that I would then critique them saying how I want it to be adapted to make it seem better for our news project.
Below are the first drafts which my applicants have sent me:
Andrew McAlinden
Andrew sent me two edits to begin with. Unfortunately, I am unable to attach these audios onto this blog post.
After hearing this first edit, I was very impressed. It has an electronic feel which is perfect for the student audience (making it modernised) as well as being very upbeat and having a distinctive jingle. It is clear that the soundtrack is associated with the news due to it's rhythm, therefore despite this being the first audio I've listened to, it is likely that this one could be used.
This draft is very diverse to the first one. It is much more groovy and has a techy feel to it which too makes this sound quite modern. However to me, I feel that this isn't a conventional news sound, when comparing it to the BBC and ITV's jingle. Nonetheless, I can see this sound working due to it being very catchy.
Geoffrey Alexander
On the other hand, Geoffrey already had a previous news soundtrack as he has done work with digital news before (however he still plans to create a new one for my project) This can be seen below:
This soundtrack too is very distinctive as well as being very cheerful and happy. It is the right length as it also includes the pause in the soundtrack to enable our news anchor to report the top stories. However, I feel that this doesn't target the student audience to an extent, and that the sound is possibly for a much broader audience. Other than that, this soundtrack too is impressive.
As we were running out of time, me and Kate had to make a quick decision on what to use. We came to the conclusion that we will be using both Geoffrey's and Andrew's music. Geoffrey's will be used as our main opening scene as well as using his track to run in the background whilst the top news is being announced.
We will then be using Andrew's for our sting - his is short and simple meaning we can use this to link our stories together as well as whenever the narrative basically switches from one part to another e.g. after Geoffrey's sound is used, we can then use Alex's to link the intro to the studio scene.
These decisions can be viewed once we have created our first draft for our news report.
Therefore, both of these sounds will be incorporated into our news channel throughout.
