'My Supermarket's website homepage |
As previously mentioned, my group and I will be visiting the cheapest supermarket so that we can get the ingredients for our cheap and affordable news. Therefore to decide what the cheapest supermarket is, I will be using the supermarket comparison site called 'MySupermarket' which will show me directly what supermarket is the cheapest dependent on what ingredient you search for.
Slight Change in our Idea
Example of comparing supermarkets on 'My Supermarket' |
All meals except for our kebab and biryani meals are the ingredients for 4 people, meaning that they won't need to be changed. We've decided to only change our kebab ingredients, as the leftover biryani could be used for someone's lunch the day after, so there isn't much point in reducing the amount of ingredients as most of them come in bundles.
The new ingredients and prices for the kebab are shown below. Only some ingredients have been changed as the others can be used for other meals, therefore there is no need to reduce the amount to buy:
- 500g lamb mince: £4
- 4x Pitta Bread: 50p
- Plain Yoghurt (150g): 50p
New Total: 18.35 - 4.99 = £13.36
This works out at £3.34 per person, when serving for 4 instead of 8.
What are the Main Ingredients?
The main ingredients won't necessarily be the typical every-day ingredients you would think of. Instead, they will be based on the ingredients needed for the meals which I have previously researched. As well as this, the ingredients which I will be researching won't be your compulsory (to an extent) ingredients. For example:
- Butter
- Salt & Pepper
- Milk & Bread
- Vegetable Oil
- Vinegar
- Vinegar
This is because you would be expected to have these ingredients, and it would make our tight budget harder to limit to if we buy these compulsory items.
Nonetheless, the main ingredients will be for all the ingredients for the 6 meals. This of course will work out cheaper once we eliminate two of the 6 meals, as we plan to only film 3 or 4. The ingredients are:
- Lamb Mince (500g) - Pizza Base (approx. 500g)
- 5x Onions - Tomato & Chilli Sauce (approx. 200g)
- 1x Garlic Bulb - Spinach Leaves (200g)
- Taram Masala (100g) - Baby Mushrooms (300g)
- Chilli Sauce (200g) - Parmesan Cheese (100g)
- 4x Pitta Bread - Medium Eggs (approx. 8)
- Tomatoes (1kg) - 2x Salmon fillets (260g)
- Red Cabbage (1kg) - Tagliatelle (500g)
- 4x Red Onion - Creme fraiche (250g)
- Plain Yoghurt (150g) - Whole Chicken (1.6kg)
- Bacon (10 rashers) - Mixed herbs (20g)
- Risotto Rice (300g) - Fosters (5 cans)
- Oxo Veg Stock (12 pots) - Red-Skinned potatoes (1kg)
- Frozen peas (1kg) - Runner Beans (400g)
- Rice (350g) - Curry Powder (200g)
- Chicken Thighs (6) - Passata (350ml)
- Jacket Potatoes (4) - Turkey Breast (300g)
- Paprika (46g) - Cumin (37g)
- Red Leicester (150g) - Spring Onions
- Cucumber (1)
- Jacket Potatoes (4) - Turkey Breast (300g)
- Paprika (46g) - Cumin (37g)
- Red Leicester (150g) - Spring Onions
- Cucumber (1)
These are all of the ingredients needed for the meals which I've researched.
How Much Do All Of These Ingredients Cost At Each Supermarket?
Asda
As I've already researched the prices for Asda, the total comes to (after adding the total price for each meal):You can see the prices on my previous research post before on the prices of each ingredient.
The prices for each meal, using up all the ingredients (if possible) are:
£13.36 (kebab burger) + £8.45 (risotto meal) + £6.21 (chicken biryani) + £10.84 (pizza) + £6.28 (salmon pasta) + £14.59 (beer chicken) + £8.18 (jacket potato) = £67.91
This works out for a meal everyday of the week is around £16.98 per person. Therefore, this research is enough evidence to prove that you can have a £20 budget which can give you high quality food everyday of the week, meaning you won't need to have microwave and instant meals anymore! Of course, you will also need money for lunch and breakfast, however you can't go wrong with spending under £20 for a significant meal everyday of the week.
