What's Different?

My group and I got together to begin to write and structure our script and when we want to film, as well as extra details. However we have came across some big changes for our project (and some little ones), which you can see below:

'Student' Nightlife story

We originally planned to do a student budget on a night out, however as mentioned in my previous update post we felt that this wouldn't be very significant. Therefore, we have decided to completely remove this story and plan a new one.

What Will Our News Story Be?

ASDA Supermarket
So our new story is this - what if we created a story showing students how to cook at home at a cheap price and have decent meals? It is commonly known that students will often eat instant, microwave ready-meals such as pot noodles purely because its quick and easy. However, what if we created a
story showing students that you don't need to spend much money to make homemade meals which are not only cheaper, but also healthier.

This would create a very interesting and factual story for our student audience and is generally positive in all ways. We then decided to brainstorm how we could film this. The structure of this film will be as the following:

Structure Of Our Film

    - Introduction: Saying about the issue of unhealthy eating, and that our reporter will be investigating
      healthy homemade and cheap eating.

   -  Shopping: Moving on, our reporter will go the supermarket to buy enough ingredients with a
budget of £20 to prepare 5 homemade meals, which we will be filming how to make/cook (we've
decided to make 5 meals so that we can choose the best 3 for our actual film).

    - Cooking: This will then lead to our reporter cooking our chosen 5 meals, showing each step and
it's ingredients, as well as how much it costs to make (and more details, see below)

    - Ending: Literally concluding that you don't need to buy instant food. Showing that it is affordable,
then giving the audience our website address so they can tell us what they're student meals are.

What Will Be In The Introduction?

Lidl Supermarket
As previously mentioned, the introduction will consist of highlighting the issue of unhealthy student eating and saying that our reporter will see whether it is possible to have homemade, cheap and healthy meals. Therefore we decided to open our story by showing this issue of unhealthy eating - showing clips of students eating say either a takeaway, microwave or ready meal. This could then lead into statistics which could backup this unhealthy student eating.

After this, these clips could lead to our reporter saying that she is going to find out whether it is possible to buy 5 homemade meals with a budget of £20. The reporter will then say that she is going to the cheapest supermarket to spend this budget of £20 to buy the main ingredients which you will need for our 5 meals.

'Shopping' Scene

After the introduction, the reporter will now go to the cheapest supermarket to get as many basic ingredients needed to make our 5 meals. This will be researched and shown on my blog as to what the cheapest supermarket is in terms of comparison of our main ingredients, which will be most of the following:
   - Jacket Potatoes
   - Beans
   - Onions
   - Corn meat (vegetarians)
   - Fillet Meat (chicken, beef, etc)
   - Mince (beef & lamb)
   - Salad: Tomatoes, lettuce
   - Eggs
   - Bread
   - Milk
   - Peas
   - Spinach
   - Pasta/rice
   - Any extras (this will be researched and I will say exactly what we will be getting)

Which Supermarket will be the cheapest?
Nonetheless, to film this, we thought there is no better way other than the use of a Point of View (POV) perspective of filming. This can be done from the use of a GoPro - we could strap the GoPro to our reporters head or chest then film her actually buying everything from the supermarket.

This will allow us to then show graphics of how much each item costs, as well as showing the remaining budget after purchase. As well as this, we could also introduce this scene with a photo lapse from the recorded footage of the GoPro, so that our audience will gain an idea of what we plan to do.

Sainsbury's Supermarket
This scene will end once our reporter has spent all of her budget, which should end showing either the trolley of all of her foods or the price it is on the till when she is paying. This will all be researched beforehand so we know exactly how much we will be spending and what we are getting. We will also give a brief introduction of the supermarket we are filming at, mentioning that it is the cheapest supermarket to get these ingredients, thus helping our audience to follow our steps and spend the same amount of money at the same place.

'Cooking' Scene

As previously mentioned, we want our audience to see what exactly these cheap meals are and how we want to cook them. This will be researched online through published news articles relating to student meals (and cheap meals in general) as well as from cooking shows so that my group and I can decide what our 5 meals could be.

'BBC Good Food' (http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/student)
Print screen from BBC's 'Good Food', from their website

I've done a bit of research so far on this by simply Googling 'cheap student meals'. The first website which came up was a sub category on the BBC website called 'BBC Good Food' (website link above). This is perfect for our news report as the website has a variety of meals you can make which is very relatable for students. For example, it says what ingredients you need, how long it takes to cook, the difficulty of cooking and a rough guide of how much it costs.

In terms of research, I am aiming to create a blog post researching these meals which are suited for this story. I will probably try and find around 6-7 meals then eliminate the weakest meals when I show my group them (even though we may only use 3-4 meals for our actual story, depending on how long it takes to film).

The Story's Ending

Of course, the ending of our story will act like a conclusion. It will basically say how cooking at home is affordable as well as healthier, not forgetting that it will increase your cookery skills and experimenting with food. We could even end it with the reporter saying which meal is her favourite then show her eating the meal once the story ends.

Who Will We Be Reporting?

Our reporter/news anchor, Dave.
We have also chosen our reporter for this story, which is Dave Chawner. Although he is also a presenter, we as a group decided that it would be efficient for the presenter to actually wanting to report
as well, as it enables our news channel to flow easier as we don't have to introduce another reporter. Nonetheless, Dave has had experience in reporting and he showed lots of enthusiasm for our story, as he himself was also a student so understands what it is like in terms of cooking meals as a student.

When Will We Be Filming?

In terms of filming, we feel that this story will only need 1 full day of filming. This is because we don't have to worry about organising interviews with anyone as this is completely reporter-led, meaning all we need is literally permission to film in the supermarket and the reporter.

We also don't have to be concerned about the date we film (apart from Sunday nights, as thats when most supermarkets are closed) and the weather and time isn't too much of a worry. This is because we are mainly filming inside so it doesn't matter if its night or day. Nonetheless, we will need to be aware of rush hours you may get in supermarkets which could disrupt our film. Therefore, we are planning to film on times when supermarkets may be quieter, which could be early afternoon or late at night (depending on whether the store is 24 hours or not.)

However, we have chosen a date to film, which will be Saturday 15th November.

What Will Our Locations Be?

Locations too aren't entirely important. We will mainly need 2 locations: The supermarket which we will be filming at, and then the place where we will be filming. However, we have decided to film at my group member's house, Sam. This is mainly because it is literally a student house thus making the setting relatable to our audience. Nonetheless, we will be needing permission to film in the supermarket and more importantly to see if we are allowed to film their products.

Plans For Now

As we have only just begun planning our story and research, we have set each other tasks as what to do now to work on this story, which you can see below:

    - Me: Finding the best 5 meals which will relate to students (like the kofta burger). This shouldn't be
anything predictable - it'll keep audience interest if we make meals which they may not expect or
      even have heard of.
    - Kate: Finding statistics relating to unhealthy student eating. Helping with Sam and I, or even
      beginning to structure our script.
    - Sam: Comparing which supermarket is the cheapest judging from the ingredients we need. This of
course is dependent on the meals which I choose, to make sure that each ingredient from the budget
      is used and not wasted.
