What will I be exploring in my essay?

Now that I feel confident analysis Grimm for my main text, I have decided to write down the key points which I will exploit within my essay. I've also added references to books where I will use quotations from these books. I still need to research a bit more for a couple of more points however this will be updated on my next post.

Below are my key points (copied from a word document):

Points

- Intro. Quote defining fiction adaptation. Outline essay focusing on tv, with comparisons to film and a book (Gatsby)
(Frus, P & Williams, C (Ed) 2010 Beyond Adaptation, McFarland & Co. Inc, Publishers) or (Hutcheon, L, 2006, A Theory of Adaptation. Routledge

- Avant Garde: Grimm. The way fairy tales have been explored and given a morbid and dark twist (auteur’s intentions)
·      (The Theory of Avant Garde, Peter Burger)

·      Opposition between post-modernist and modernist audiences
-       Fairytales written in 1700s(modernist), this series is very modern (2011) (postmodern). Argue integrity – post modernist consists of texts to be action-packed and entertainment filled. Argue integrity is limited in fairytale as it was a book and not a film. Deliberate infringement?
-       Evident in film adaptation: Modernist book differs to post-modernist film. Issues have been exaggerated and modernized to gratify some audience personal identity needs. Deliberate infringement.
 -  Reception Theory

- Character homage
·      Grimm:Fairytale homage is identifiable however integrity has been infringed to adapt to the modern era.
·      Gatsby: Original homage for all characters. E.g. materialism throughout the narrative for Tom and Gatsby.

- Semiotics & Intertextuality
·      Intertextual references to the fairy tale genre e.g iconic Red Riding Hood Jacket, also original integrity as is used to symbolize danger
·      Evident in Gatsby. Metaphoric symbolism e.g. Doctor Eckelburg, Gatsbys cars, etc.
·      (Semiotics: An introductory Anthology)
·      (Intertextuality: Theories and Practices)
·     (Adaptation Revisited: Television and the Classic Novel)

- Fidelty of the original text: Auteur’s intentions (link to avant garde)
·      Auteur’s twist to original fairytale stories. ARGUE ITS A TRANSFORMATION – HOWEVER FOR THE BEST?; not an adaptation (see quote) Doesn’t include the whole narrative of some stories.
·      Gatsby: narrative in film alters to original narrative. Decharacterization of Nick. Narrative made more problematic to adapt to modernized audience.
·      (Frus, P & Williams, C (Ed) 2010 Beyond Adaptation, McFarland & Co. Inc, Publishers)

·     Direct comparison of Gatsby to value this infringement.

  Mulvey's theory??

Beyond Adaptation - one of the
books I will be referring to
in my essay.
