Throughout the last week, I have been brainstorming what to do for my 4 minute film. I came up with plenty ideas but have chosen one idea which I think suits the best. These are only basic ideas so are likely to be changed as I work on this project, however it is an outline for my idea.
Characters
Main Character - A young boy aged between 17-18, who is at the last year of sixth form at his school. A student whom is very determined to be successful - one who is in need of high grades so that he can get into the university he has applied for. The character must be represented initially to be quite anxious and worrying - more importantly be portrayed to act 'trapped' and stressed because he is nervous about collecting his A level results. I have decided to call the student Aiden.Other Character - This character is a teacher who is giving the student his results. There must be a distinctive relationship between the teacher and student - perhaps the teacher could be a form tutor of some sort whom has helped the student with his subjects. Nevertheless, the teacher should be male and be aged in his 20-30s. The teacher should also create a positive outlook which juxtaposes against the student. This can be done from the use of a vibrant costume design swell as portraying the teacher to be inspiring and energetic.
'Unknown' Character - This character should be a student whom has just received his/her results. The details of this student aren't entirely necessary as the character only passes by. Nevertheless, this character must be in the same year (and of course the same school) as my main character. They take notice of each others presence however aren't friends - the only thing they have in common is the same school.
Location
Home - The students home. This location is essential due to it introducing the story, meaning the audience will learn about the student from this location. It must reinforce the idea of the character being trapped in school and how school has basically taken over his life.Unspecified Location - Here I have decided to use a secluded alleyway or a tunnel. This links the home and the school together as it shows my main character walking towards the school. The idea of having a secluded and somewhat recognisable location reinforces the idea of entrapment, due to the alley/tunnel' seclusion. Additionally, this helps to create a low key lighting which will help gain the consistency of lighting within my film.
Different Location - This location is reasonably tricky. The story says that the 'different location' mustn't be familiar and instead the character should feel 'lost'. This is when I came up with the idea that it doesn't have to be a different location In general (e.g. it doesn't have to be different to the school). So, this location will be the walk from the school entrance to the teacher's office. Of course the character isn;'t entirely familiar with this walk as the character is a 'good' student so doesn't have to venture to the teacher's office often as he doesn't get in trouble. However he won't exactly be 'lost' - however he may be 'lost' in emotions as he is nervous to get his results. He could be 'lost' in thought, full of mixed emotions making the character seem more nervous.
Story
The day of results day. The character wakes up and is both excited and nervous to collect his/her results - mainly more excited as it means the official end of school. The character gets a ring from a friend saying to meet him at the results. The passing character could be someone from the school however they aren't exactly friends but take notice of each others appearance. The character is familiar with his location until he walks through towards reception of the school. He then becomes slightly unfamiliar as it has been around 2 months since he last went school - it seems like years since he last came back to school! Walking through reception to the teacher's office, the character almost feels 'lost'. The nerves begin to hit as he can see people queuing up collecting their results from their form tutors. He meets his friend and they say good luck to one another. They go separate ways to different form tutors however focuses on the main character. The small talk begins as he meets his form tutor as he gets his results (the undefined package). Walking out of school waiting outside he opens his results and gets what he wanted, however now feels free as he has worked for what he has got and never has to attend school. This is where the package influences his mood and freedom is shown as the nerves leave.
Goal - To get the student's results and finish school for good.
Problem - The nerves begin to kick in making the student panic as to whether he has done well or not
Change - Receives his results to find out he done well, meaning he has completely finished school and is now free for summer! The clear change is the change from the student being 'trapped' from school, to becoming 'free' for summer and away from school.
Undefined Package
Conclusion
To conclude, I'm slowly feeling more comfortable about my project - everything is slowly falling into place and I now have the basic ideas for my story. However there are a couple of problems which may reoccur. Firstly, the general location of the school - It may be difficult to film at a school due to the school being in use, and of course asking for permission from the school. This is similar for my 'unspecified location' - it may be difficult to find a small room which is used to look like an office. This may effect my film because the environment and mise-en-scene must symbolise that it is a teacher's office, otherwise the scene may not be as effective.
