Welcome Back!
Hello and welcome back to my blog! After having a couple of weeks off over Christmas I return to begin our final two projects of my second year at university. So whats in store for me and my university colleagues for this working term then? I'll give you an introduction on what lies ahead.
Similar to my last term at university, we once again have been assigned two projects to be completed at the same time, where the deadlines are reasonably close to one another. So what will I be doing?
Studio Production
After coming back to university, we were introduced to our first project - studio production. This is something new for all of us as for this we will all be working together as a class to create and film a 30 minute LIVE show in the studio. We will be assessed dependent on the role we choose for the studio (as we get to pick which part we want). For example, some of the roles are:
- Producer (the creator of the idea for the show)
- Studio Director
- Vision Mixer
- Studio Camera
- Package Editor
So the first stages for this unit are of course to come up with an idea for the show. It can range from a game to a chat show however we have been told that it CANNOT be a talent show, as well as recommended not to include animals, people under the age of 16, any cooking plus anything which can be defined as dangerous.
Our first assignment therefore is for us to individually come up with an idea for the studio where we will then be pitching to our course leaders so that they can decide which show is the best and most viable. We've been given 2 weeks to find this idea and creating a rough idea as to whether it could work for the show. Once we've all pitched our ideas, we will then be told whose idea will be used (therefore giving them the producer role). Shortly after this we then need to prepare a CV and have an interview with our course leaders to apply for whatever role we would prefer for the studio.
To me this sounds very exciting however at the same time quite competitive! Our show also needs to include the following requirements:
- Have two distinctive halves of the programme
- 4x VT's (Video tapes - pre-recorded and edited footage)
- Set, costumes and props, which will be created by the film and theatre students at our university
- Viral marketing to get our audience and all the research and preparation we need
- Title sequence and credits which will be specially shot.
- A studio audience, to make the show as realistic as it can be.
For me, I found it quite difficult to decide which role I wanted to choose. I know that I want to be on camera, however I feel that I should push the boundaries and go for a more important and difficult role, such as a studio director or producer for VTs or Promotions. As well as this, I also want to gain more experience in editing or design so an editing role too would be very useful for me.
Nonetheless, I've decided (only just) which three roles I wanted to apply for, which in order are:
1. Studio Director: I've decided to choose this for my first choice as I feel this would be a huge
challenge for me and could benefit me considerably. I've also had a passion as a director and have
built confidence with it within the past year from my previous work, therefore would like this
role the most.
2.Studio Camera/ VT camera: This is my second decision as I feel it's my strongest skill, so I've
decided to play it easy and choose a role which I felt most confident with.
3. Promotional Producer: This role is something quite different for me and decided to go for it
purely as it would be a challenge. Following on from my last 2 pieces of work, I feel that I've
gained confidence with being a producer, plus this role is always beneficial as well as a
responsible role.
What Is my Desired Role?

Unit 2: Professional Practice
This unit is something much more individual and different compared to all the other units I've done at university. Here, we have the choice to either find a professional work placement or create a commission video for a company. The purpose of this unit is purely to give us experience in the professional world and to help us create links which could be beneficial in the future.
Dependent on whether we choose a placement or a commission, we get assessed from our employer as well as writing a short report based on how us, as students, feel how we've done (which then gets assessed by our course leaders/examiners).
This means that we have to expand on our CVs, gain confidence with asking for work placements or commissions, and generally become more independent and search for placements and these opportunities ourselves. However, Laura (one of our course representatives) will constantly help us and search for these opportunities for us to apply for.
Commissions Video or Work Placement: Which One?
For me, I would personally rather do a work placement purely for the fact it seems more educational and gives a better insight into the professional world of filming. However, dependent on what the commission is (if it interests me or not), this too could be chosen. This is all dependent on what the chances of finding a good placement or commission actually is.
