The Factual part of SnapChat

To help give our story some reinforcement and generally making it more informative, I've decided to research statistics which are relevant to the following:

    - Statistics in terms of the application's success
    - Any 'Selfie' statistics
    - Fun & unique facts e.g. how much people spend on it a day, etc
    - The financial worthing of the app
    - Any other relative facts e.g. Comparison with other companies, etc

Of course, whilst researching I must make sure that the statistics are from an official and published website in case any may've been made up/altered.

Edudemic: Student Community Company: http://www.edudemic.com/selfie-infographic/

As I mentioned in my previous research on the app, I found a website called 'edudemic' which had lots of interesting statistics relating to mainly student articles. As I haven't heard of the website before, I began researching the website's Twitter and Facebook - it had 118k followers and 34k likes on Facebook. This means that the website company is reasonably well known meaning that its statistics are likely to be accurate.

As the title for the article is "Art or Vanity? A look at the selfie backlash", you could argue that despite the statistics, the article could be biased - the statistics shown could be used to support an argument against SnapChat judging from where the title is a 'selfie backlash'. Furthermore, this could alter the accuracy of the statistics if the article is biased as they may've been exaggerated to support its answer. Nonetheless, I've decided to categorise the statistics into a for and against balance, as well as any extra helpful statistics.

Arguing against SnapChat

   - 74% of camera phone users are annoyed by other's selfies, where over half is blamed on the way
      people pose
   - 34% of those who take a selfie use it for personal appearance… Would this high percentage link to
why people are annoyed by other people's selfies?
   - 55% of people spend 15 minutes taking and editing selfies… Could this time be used for something
     more informative?

   - 88% take at least one selfie every week… which adds up to around an hour a month, 4x the amount
      people read everyday.

Arguing for SnapChat

    - 89% of people who use SnapChat believe it is just for fun
    - It has proved that the app has led to people's creativity and artistic manor to come out as 44% use
editing apps to create artistic selfies and 73% prefer to experiment with editing apps instead of
      simple filters

Other

   - 69% of 18-29 year olds have taken a selfie. This information is relevant as it is aimed at our target
     audience.
   - 37% of 45-60 year olds have taken a selfie

Despite the article being potentially biased, I still plan to use this for our news report as the statistics are very relevant and is something that our audience would want to see.

DMR (Digital Marketing Ramblings): http://expandedramblings.com/index.php/snapchat-statistics/

I then came across a website called DMR - a marketing company whom claims that it is "The latest digital marketing stats, tips, trends and technology." This makes a very reliable source in terms of statistics (if it is true) considering that the company is focused on marketing, making the statistics very accurate. However, as well as posting frequent articles regarding statistics and unknown facts, the website also has valuable tips relating to other social networking and the internet in general.

Moving on, I found a website article called "25 Amazing SnapChat statistics" which was updated in September, making the article valid and reliable as it is very recent. After looking through the statistics, I realised that every single statistic has been taken from various sites, meaning that it is highly unlikely that the statistics have been made up.

Below are the key points which may be helpful for our news report. I've decided to split these too in the categories social, financial and other.

Social Facts

   - Around 400 million snap chats taken a day, however 12% of these are to multiple recipients
   - 71% is the number of people aged under 25 who use SnapChat
   - Globally spread: 50% of smartphones in Norway have SnapChat, with 25% in the UK
   - 50% of male students take seflies, however 77% of female students take selfies. This leads to 77%
Print screen taking from the website
of all university students have SnapChat on their phone.
   - 2% of university students use it to send 'sexts' (link to #AfterSexSelfie part of the story)
   - Over 1 million SnapChat stories are viewed a day

Financial Facts

   - SnapChat was created in 2011
   - Facebook offered to buy out SnapChat for $3 billion in 2013, despite the app being reported to be
worth over $10 billion (according to Daw Jones, the world's most published business news
    company)
    - From December 2013 to May 2014, there has been a 67% growth on the mobile app
    - SnapChat stars have earned up to $100,000 a week

Other Facts

     - Theres only 30 SnapChat employees
     - The SnapChat CEO is only 23.

Conclusion

I was quite surprised how easy it was to find reliable and accurate statistics, as I feel that I have enough even though I've only looked at two websites. The last site is very reliable and generally has better statistics therefore my group and I will probably use these statistics more as they are reinforced by other news articles, unlike the first website. Nonetheless, we have a wide range of social and financial facts which is very helpful, as well as having some statistics for the pros and cons of using the application.
