For my adaptation, I've recently mentioned how the use of a rose will play a key part. Therefore I've decided to do a little research on the symbolism of roses and how I will adapt it into my film.
Like most flowers, there are a large variety of colours which can be interpreted differently in terms of their symbolism. Below are the three main colour of roses which I am planning on using within my story to allow the narrative to flow, as well as to allow the audience to understand what I am trying to portray.
I found a website online which highlights all the symbolic meanings which each rose might connote, the website is called:
Red Roses

Similar to the colour red itself, red roses often convey deep emotions. This usually consists of desire and love - it is commonly known that people may give roses to show their love for someone else. Additionally, it also can connote a sense of regret and sorrow. This will be very helpful for my film as the soldier could give his partner the red rose to symbolise their love as he goes to war - it can be used in a way to objectify their love.
White Roses

White roses however are symbolised in a diverse way. Instead of love, white roses often signify purity and innocence - similar to the colour white in general. They are often given to brides for weddings to reinforce this idea of clarity between the two getting married. This may also work with my film as it can symbolise the innocence of either the soldier and his partner for example the soldier is innocent and doesn't deserve to die or the partner doesn't deserve the paranoia knowing whether her partner has been killed or not.
Black Roses

Black roses however generally create a negative and harsh feel. Like the colour black, black roses are used to signify someone's goodbyes and farewell. They are the symbolism of death and are often given to indicate the awareness of someones death. This too will be helpful for my film as it can act as the farewell of the soldier's death.
Transition of the roses
From this research, I think I may be able to show this transition in colour of the roses to remain symbolic for the narrative. The progression throughout gradually shows the death of the rose which too is shown through the change in colours. For example, the red rose indicates love at the beginning of the narrative where the rose then eventually becomes black - showing the death and closure of their relationship.
Therefore, I will use this transition within my film as I feel it will be very effective for moving the narrative along whilst renaming symbolic and expressing the personal emotions of the characters.
