Character Examples
After doing research into my characters, I found a couple of examples whom portray similar characteristics as to which I want my characters to be like. Below are an example of my main character and the teacher character
 |
Lenny from Waterloo Road |
Main Character - Kane
For my main character, I intend to use someone whom is portrayed to be quite timid and weak-willed - someone whom looks concerned and stress due to having a lot of their mind. These characteristics are shown from the character Lenny in Waterloo Road - the character is frequently shown dominated by his sister making him seem 'trapped', as he doesn't have the confidence to stand up for himself. This is reinforced by his bad background (as he doesn't have any other family) which makes the character quite lonely as well. Nonetheless, Lenny is shown to be very determined to be successful which links to my character quite well, as well as linking to why he is stressed as he is scared of failure. Additionally, this idea of showing concerns through characters are shown clearly through Lenny's Non Verbal Communication, which you can see in the image below.
Teacher Character
For this character, I intend to uses someone in their mid 20s whom creates a positive outlook within my film (as mentioned in my previous blog post). This is when I researched the role Justin Timberlake plays in the film Bad Teacher. Here, the teacher is portrayed as a successful (shown from his expensive car) yet inspiring teacher to not only the students but to the teachers as well. This links perfectly with my character as Justin Timberlake also shows outlooks of being very energetic and joyful - thus linking to how I want my teacher character to be inspiring the student, and to create subtle hints that the student will become 'free' (like the teacher) once he receives his results.

Costume Design
As well as these examples, I have also found ideas for costume designs on which I would like my characters to wear.
Main Character - Kane
As mentioned in my director's statement, my main character should refer to the colour palette throughout my film. This means that Kane should generally portray a bland portrayal in terms of his colour and his costume design as well. Such costume design therefore should consist of basic and 'unfashionable' clothing - any clothing which generally doesn't seem appealing for the audience. For example, baggy jeans, a plain polo and plain shoes. Such design should also consist of basic colouring - either being black, white or grey. The costume design must relate to the monotonous colour palette to reinforce this idea of being trapped which furthermore shows a lack of enjoyment and fun within my main character's life. Although not quite which I am aiming for, Evan in
Superbad follows a similar costume design - you can see the character is wearing basic and bland clothing which works significantly well with the character he plays in the film.

Here is an image of my character's costume design. As you can see, the clothes he is wearing reflect perfectly with his mood and the theme of my film. The idea of wearing all black also helps to reinforce how he becomes more lively and energetic even through his clothes after he receives his results, as you can see in the images below:

Although the images aren't great, you can see the difference in clothing which happens after Kane receives his results. |
Teacher Character
Whilst on the topic of
Justin Timberlake in
Bad Teacher, his costume design follows a similar idea as to what I would like my teacher to wear. The costume design must juxtapose against my main character. For example, it should be more vibrant and have brighter colours compared to the bland design which my main character wears. However, because he is a teacher, the audience should easily be able to recognise the difference and understand that he is a character. This can be done from the use of symbolic clothing - e.g. wearing a suit, glasses, tie etc which you can see in the image below.
