To help us to understand how directing can have an effect on a story, Simon showed us the introduction to a film called There Will be Blood, directed by Paul Thomas Andereson.

So after watching the first 7 or so minutes of the film, there was no dialogue presented within the story whatsoever - only a few grunts and noises from the characters but no actual words. This I found to be quiet interesting considering it was the opening of a film meaning the most important part in terms of the audience's engagement with the characters and setting. You would think that having little dialogue would make it complex to tell the story, when in fact it the story was easily shown despite a couple of enigmas i.e. the characters names.

Therefore, this introduction to the film showed me a different way of introducing a story by showing me that key story ingredients (dialogue in this case) aren't always necessary.
